/Roots and Beginnings

Memories intertwine our past with the present, shaping who we are and grounding us in our sense of self. This area delves into the nostalgic echoes of childhood and old Hong Kong, inviting visitors to reconnect with the meaningful moments that define identity. These experiences, often tucked away in the depths of our minds, quietly influence our emotions and perspectives.

In Roots and Beginnings, memory becomes a gateway to revisit the essence of who we are. Through interactive exhibits, you are invited to rediscover the connection between your present self and the stories of your past. Personal and shared recollections come alive, revealing how these moments shape our emotions and plant the seeds of comfort, nostalgia, and quiet reflection.

As you move through this space, a tender warmth emerges, a blend of nostalgia and introspection that mirrors the complexity of memory itself. Through touch, sound, and movement, the past becomes more than a distant echo – it is a living, breathing part of today. This experience reminds us that memory is not just about looking back, but about finding meaning and connection in the present.

Neon Memories

This immersive experience transforms your body into a living brush. As you move naturally, AI instantly converts your gestures into flowing neon light patterns that dance through space.

Hong Kong's neon lights were never mere decorations - they pulsed with the city's unique rhythm and breath. Through this interactive encounter, vanishing street scenes from the city's past reemerge in luminous form.

Merging real-time computation with interactive technology, this work invites you to reinterpret Hong Kong's urban memories through intuitive physical expression. More than nostalgic remembrance, it creates a dynamic dialogue between human movement and urban identity, between present moment and collective memory.

Memories in Pixels

This installation reimagines a vintage television as a portal that bridges the past and present, transforming it into a dynamic canvas of memory and identity. The TV reflects a real-time video of those who pass by or stand before it, blending their live image with fragments of personal and collective histories. It becomes more than just a screen—it’s a mirror of who we are, shaped by the echoes of where we’ve been.

As you see yourself reflected on the screen, the installation invites you to consider how the flow of time—your past experiences, early dreams, and the histories that surround you—has shaped the person you are today. The vintage TV, a relic of another era, serves as a metaphor for how memories are preserved, distorted, and rediscovered.

By pausing to look at your reflection, you actively engage in a dialogue between the fleeting present and the enduring past. The installation reminds us that identity is ever-evolving—a mosaic of moments, memories, and aspirations. In this interplay between real-time video and nostalgic tones, the TV becomes a living portrait of memory, inviting introspection on how the stories we carry continue to shape our sense of self.

Echoes of the Forgotten Touch

Step into a sensory journey to the past with Playtronica's Playtron, where objects from old Hong Kong come to life through the power of touch. Everyday relics from a bygone era resonate with sound, creating a connection between your body and their untold stories.

This interplay of touch and sound forms a symphony of memory, blending nostalgia and creativity. At the heart of the installation is a homely dining table, styled after 1980s-90s Hong Kong. The dining table, a universal symbol of connection, evokes the emotions tied to shared meals—warmth, love, and fragments of cherished memories.

Set in a family scene complete with a child, each object on the table produces a distinct sound, sparking a resonance with both collective and personal memories. Even the dining table itself is a special creation, proudly handcrafted by our students, symbolizing a bridge between tradition and innovation.

By engaging with these objects, you become part of a process of remembering and reconstructing. The echoes of the past meet the pulse of the present, inviting reflection on the fragility and reinvention of memory. This installation reminds us that memory is not just about looking back—it is an act of creation. As you interact with these forgotten fragments, you transform them into something new, weaving them into the rhythm of today and bringing the past to life once more.
